Online RPG Editor: PHPore
September 5, 2010 | 9 comments
There was a time (the high school years) I spent much of my spare time working on personal projects. Among these projects, there was one I particularly liked and was named PHPore.
PHPore?
PHPore, that means PHP Online RPG Editor. The name is pretty clear: it's a tool to create online RPG written in PHP.
Let's remember the context: when I was 17, in 2005, I "enjoyed" programming a RPG editor inspired by RPG Maker, using php, (a lot of) javascript, containing ajax interactions, a map editor, a dedicated programming language, multiplayer features, a built-in chat... And all of this in a context where modern browsers of today didn't exist (with all the problems it involved), and when I had no idea what a client framework such as jQuery is...
The idea was to make a program that nobody dared to do before...
Well, it's true that work on something that has never been done before can be very difficult (no guarantee of success, no reference model...), but it's certainly a very interesting task. This matches with my idea (still today) of creating something new instead of repeating the same thing all the time.
The project itself has never been completely finished... BUT what I quoted above is actually working, enough to make me talk about that on a few sites that I used to like: The Games Creators Network or Le Site du Zéro.
An alpha version was available in some websites, while I was "preparing" the beta version, more powerful... But despite the big amount of energy I have provided in this project, it has never ended. The beta version has never seen the sunlight...
After several years, noticing that PHPore got some audience, I eventually considered the idea that somebody would like to use this project, even if it's not finished, and in fact put it online.
This is what I did recently!
Download and Install PHPore

You can download PHPore source code or on github and install or modify it... This is the first time I distribute this version of the code, that was dying on my hard disk drive for several years thought. I just took some time to fix some bugs, and online!
To be continued...
Because PHPore is the result of a big amount of work, it contains some subtlety that should be explained.
Thus, I will write some articles in order to give details about several key features of PHPore and help anybody that would like to use it, or improve it.

@Timo: unfortunately, as it's a very old project, I don't plan to improve it myself. But if somebody is interested to work on it, he just has to get the source code.
